Hello everyone and welcome back to the Inked Blog! We have officially started a new season of the show!! And in this episode of the show, we are jumping into Exposition dos and don'ts with our guest James Summers. So, let's just get to our questions for the day!
What is exposition in your own words?
"Put simply it is the beginning, it is the starting point for your story, it creates your base,"
Reilly's note: Your exposition is the part of your stories where you introduce everything so make sure that you are paying attention to those early details.
What should be included in your exposition?
"Introduce your main character first and foremost so we can see who we're following, you should also include a vibe for your story, you want your first chapter or exposition to set the mood for your story,"
Reilly's Note: Make sure you include physical descriptions in your first chapter so that your readers can fully visualize the character.
Do you have tips for writing exposition well?
"Your exposition is the part of your story that captures your readers attention first and it's important to hook them right away, so having a unique starting line is super important so make sure your first line is super powerful, thinking of those first lines think about the Hobbit and how it started by catching your attention and still giving you background,"
Reilly's Note: First lines are super important so make sure that you are happy with your first sentence.
Is there a time we shouldn't have exposition?
"This is a tough question because every story has an exposition no matter what, so no I don't think there is a time to have no exposition, but you can start a story without giving all the background in the beginning,"
Reilly's Note: You can do mini stories within your story through each chapter so doing that often leads to you not having a clear exposition, or you can just throw them in a story out of order where they are seeing the rising action first and then seeing exposition later.
Well, that's the end of our episode! And of this blog post so we will see you guys' next time!
